Project Overview
Gymea North Public School partnered with Valeo Technology and Moodsonic to transform key learning and communal spaces through multisensory design. The goal was to support student wellbeing, enhance engagement, and create environments that feel good to be in, whether you’re learning, collaborating, or simply taking a moment to reset.
The solution integrates biophilic soundscaping, nature-inspired visual design and sensory innovation(enclosed water feature) to enrich the school’s learning environments in a way that supports both neurotypical and neurodiverse students.

Design Objectives
Create immersive sensory environments that support student learning, creativity, and emotional regulation
Introduce activity-based sound zoning to reflect different learning needs, from quiet concentration to collaborative discussion
Use localised soundscapes to foster connection with Australian environments and Indigenous culture
Improve cognitive performance and reduce distractions through acoustic privacy and ambient sound design

What Was Delivered
🔊 Biophilic Soundscapes
Moodsonic’s generative, non-repeating soundscapes were deployed in the library and classroom zones to reflect the needs of each space:
-
Focus Zones: Calming natural sounds that reduce speech intelligibility and support attention
-
Collaboration Zones: Uplifting audio environments designed to energise and inspire connection
-
Custom Content: Soundscapes inspired by iconic Australian environments (e.g. Rottnest Island) and complemented by Indigenous themes
“The students and teachers love the soundscaping… it’s really helped invigorate the different spaces. The ability to change themes has been great and allows us to provide a more calming or energetic experience when required.”
— Vice Principal, Gymea North Public School
🧠Support for Neurodiverse Students
The soundscapes were intentionally designed to accommodate students with sensory sensitivities. Moodsonic’s zonable and adaptable system allows for tailored experiences that are engaging but never overwhelming—ensuring inclusivity is embedded in the environment.

💧 Enclosed Water Feature
A sealed biophilic water feature was installed to provide a visual anchor that complemented the soundscape experience. It created a multisensory moment that delighted students, sparking awe and curiosity while reinforcing a calming connection to nature safely designed for use in education environments.

🌿 Biophilic Planting Guidance
Valeo also applied its biophilic design expertise to recommend affordable, low-maintenance indoor planting options to further bring the library to life. These suggestions enhanced the visual appeal of the space while also contributing to better air quality and overall wellbeing.

Outcome
The partnership between Gymea North Public School and Valeo Technology has created a future-focused, inclusive educational setting. By designing for the senses, the school now supports not only academic outcomes—but emotional wellbeing, environmental awareness, and a deeper connection to place.
It’s a space where every student, regardless of neurotype, can feel calm, focused, and inspired to learn.
